Using bar branches Print

I found this picture on Kickstarter – Stephen Voss was raising money for a book he was publishing.  The book is to be an artistic endeavor not a bonsai pictorial documentary.  From an artistic standpoint the display table and stand are truly inventive.  But look at the tree.  There are three branches very close together – two of them may have been “bar” branches.  But some simple adjustment to the branch orientation, and you get something that is visually appealing. Be sure to think about this when looking at young trees.  We tend to look at some material and set it aside because of flaws that can be used to our advantage with some very simple tricks.  Bonsai is an art of simplicity and illusion.
